Sourcing in China

Sourcing in China

Posted by Melenco Team in Business Development, Purchasing 29 Apr 2015

Over the past couple of years the manufacturing capabilities of China have been growing continuously. Even though the cost of manufacturing in China have risen slightly over recent years, the country is still one of the cheapest location for retailers and manufacturers to source goods or parts.

If you are looking to source parts in China the easiest and most cost-effective place to start is the Internet. Thousands of suppliers are listed on websites such as Alibaba, and give your the opportunity to streamline your search in such a way that it fits the exact needs of your company. In addition, the reviews that some of these websites include may indicate whether or not a supplier is legitimate or not. You should be cautious if you search online! Many websites indicate suppliers as “verified”, take note that this may only mean that the companies are verified to exist. It does not necessarily mean that their product capability, quality, or reputation have been verified.

You can also look into manufacturing companies on social media platforms, as these often easily allow you to identify suppliers. Not all suppliers have a strong social media presence, but for those that do, their profiles can be a good source for feedback or reviews on the company.

The most conventional way of looking for legitimate suppliers is by attending trade shows. There you have the opportunity to have a face-to-face chat with potential suppliers about their company, potential, and how they might be a perfect fit for you to do business with. Needless to say, direct interaction with potential suppliers can help you evaluate but also verify their abilities.

The most important element of sourcing products in China is not actually the way in which you go about finding potential suppliers. The most essential element to your search is to perform adequate diligence on potential suppliers. A trading company or trade intermediator can be a good option if you are hesitant to deal with all the complexities of sourcing in China.
